End of the Spear
On January 20, the movie End of the Spear was released in 1,200 theaters nationwide. The film documents the incredible events in 1956 surrounding the missionary efforts of five Americans and theirfamilies in reaching out to the Auca Indians of Ecuador, a tribe known for their savagery. Their attempts to befriend the tribe resulted in the deaths of Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian. But this seeming tragedy was only the beginning “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
– Jim Elliotof an amazing story of forgiveness, redemption, and grace. Several family members ofthe martyred missionaries returned to the jungles of Ecuador to minister to the Aucas (today called the “Waorani”), and their efforts resulted in many members of the tribe becoming Christians. In an unbelievable expression of reconciliation, Steve Saint, Nate’s son, was baptized by two of the men who murdered his father, in the very river where his father died.
